Dollhouse, que teve 0.8 nas audiências preliminares (as que eu publico aqui) e 0.9 nas audiências finais (as que eu publico na secção das audiências), subiu para 1.0. É improvável, mas pode ser que suba para 1.1 nas finais. Ficámos em 3º no horário, o que já não acontece há muito tempo. As comédias da Fox que passam às 8:00 tiveram apenas um 0.8, logo Dollhouse é o melhor que a Fox tem à sexta. O balanço desta semana é positivo e dá esperança, mas não garante a continuidade da série depois da pausa de uma semana (sim, só temos mais Dollhouse daqui a 2 semanas).

Claire: “Slaves are just slaves. But winning over your enemy, the one person guaranteed to reject everything you are, that’s real love.” A Saunders teve excelente material durante todo o episódio. Esta citação é um bom exemplo disso mesmo.

2. Eliza Dushku foi muito criticada pela sua interpretação de Echo na 1ª temporada. O que achaste dela em Vows?

Carlos Couceiro: Bem melhor do que na primeira temporada, em especial no diálogo com Ballard sobre a existência dentro de si de todas as outras impressões.
Echo: “I remember everything. Sometimes I’m someone else and then I come back, but I still feel them. All of them. I’ve been many people. I can hear them, sometimes suddenly. I’m all of them, but none of them is me. Do you know who’s real?”
Ballard: “Caroline.”
Echo: “I want to find her. I want to find all of them. Real them. They can be found. We are lost, but we are not gone.”
Um dos melhores diálogos de sempre em Dollhouse.

Pedro Maciel: Nem melhor nem pior que na temporada de estreia. Por vezes consegue encarnar o papel que faz, mas outras vezes não nos convence daquilo que diz/faz. No entanto, neste episódio ela nem está tão mal como noutros.

ZB: A Eliza Dushku não é uma actriz muito versátil, apesar deste (e refiro-me à série e não ao episódio), talvez, ser o trabalho onde ela demonstrou maior versatilidade (e atenção que ser mais versátil não significa ser melhor ou pior) até hoje. Neste episódio, mesmo que tivesse tido a melhor interpretação da sua vida (e não teve) dificilmente despertaria atenção para a mesma visto que foi totalmente ofuscada pela brilhante prestação da Amy Acker.

3. Topher: irritante ou incompreendido? Notaste algumas melhorias na 2ª temporada?

Carlos Couceiro: Ambas. Está menos nerd, o que não é necessariamente bom, mas no geral está igual a si mesmo.

Pedro Maciel: Quase toda a 1.ª temporada ele foi irritante e inconsequente. No episódio 13, foi-nos apresentado um outro Topher. Neste há um pouco dos dois. Já sem ser tão irritante como antes, as piadas dele nunca me convenceram. É das personagens mais estereotipadas da série.

ZB: Definitivamente… irritante. Neste episódio, nem tanto. No “Epitaph One”, idem. No geral, demasiado irritante. Não ao nível da Dawn, mas quase.

4. Paul afastou-se há muito tempo do estereótipo do herói clássico. Está a tornar-se no personagem mais moralmente ambíguo da série. Quais são as suas motivações ao trabalhar na Dollhouse? Será a sua obsessão por Echo saudável?

Carlos Couceiro: O bacano está muito obcecado, as motivações são as óbvias e a entrada na Dollhouse serve apenas para cumprir os objectivos que este sempre teve. Matar o Dragão e salvar a donzela. No entanto quantos mais dias passa dentro da Dollhouse, mais perceberá o quão cinzento é o mundo.

Pedro Maciel: A passagem de Paul de um lado da barricada para o outro, foi mal explicada e um pouco forçada. Agora, de um momento para o outro, acompanhamos um outro Paul. Cliente ou handler, ele continua a ter o seu plano para derrubar a organização. A trabalhar lá dentro, ele achará que é mais fácil. Tenho dúvidas que Adelle confie plenamente nele.
Não julgo que ele tenha uma obsessão por Echo. Move-lhe o que lhe moveu quando acordou a libertação de November: dar liberdade aos activos. Ele canaliza as suas acções para Echo, mas o objectivo dele é bem maior.

ZB: Eu acho que a motivação maior do personagem, aquela que condiciona todos os seus movimentos e decisões, é muito simples e não é derrubar a Dollhouse: é comer a Caroline/Echo. Se essa necessidade de ter aquela mulher é saudável ou não? Acho que ainda não transpôs quaisquer limites do tolerável.

Cláudia: O Paul intriga-me. Desde o princípio que ele se tem transformado numa personagem sombria, na minha opinião. Ele afirma querer derrubar a Dollhouse mas no entanto, está é obcecado por esta Caroline e não a Dollhouse. E esta obsessão não é nada saudável! Comparo-o com o Alpha e viu-se bem que ele continua obcecado por ela. Não é bem um típico herói.

5. O que houve de melhor e pior no episódio?

Carlos Couceiro: Amy Acker e o seu merecido destaque valeu a espera pela nova temporada. O pior foi a falta de avanços no arco global da série. Joss Whedon tem que apressar o passo se quiser atar todas as pontas soltas até ao episódio 26.

Pedro Maciel: Melhor: toda a cena entre Topher e Saunders/Whiskey. Muito boa. Pior: o caso. Desinteressante, cliché ao máximo e inconsequente. Para além disso, o material que Jamie Bamber teve para trabalhar foi ridículo.

ZB: Melhor: Sem dúvida a Saunders e o seu conflito existencial. Pior: Apesar de inevitável, pois quer se queira ou não esse é o âmago da série, o regresso do “case of the week”, que mais não serviu do que para voltar a revelar os mesmos problemas de sempre da série. Além disso, o facto de não terem situado a acção temporalmente no início do episódio. Só soube que tinham passado alguns meses na acção porque fui ao site oficial da série consultar a sinopse do episódio.

Episódio 2: Instinct

Instinct é um episódio com uma boa ideia que foi bem executada até um certo ponto. No caso da semana, Echo (Eliza Dushku) adopta a personalidade de uma mãe para um cliente cuja mulher morreu a parir o filho. O episódio tem um argumento sólido, mas esperava mais comédia vinda de de escritoras como Michelle Fazekas e Tara Butters, criadoras de Reaper. Sei que este é um assunto pouco apropriado para este género, mas as séries de Joss Whedon sempre foram conhecidas por ter uma mistura drástica de comédia que normalmente não se adaptaria bem à maioria das séries.

O enredo foi bom e estudava a sensação que um Active tem ao passar por tantas diferentes personalidades. Sensação essa muito bem expressada por Echo no final do episódio. No entanto, esperava mais. Echo ainda não evoluiu e parece que quando veste uma personalidade fica sem a dela. Isto leva-nos ao grande problema da primeira temporada: é difícil sentir empatia com alguém que muda de personalidade todas as semanas.

Num comentário a uma review a este mesmo episódio noutro site da especialidade, foi dito que este episódio seria perfeito como piloto e esta é a mais pura das verdades. Era impossível alguém que nunca tivesse visto Dollhouse começar a ver Vows e perceber metade do que estava a acontecer. O episódio nem teve o “Anteriormente em Dollhouse…”. Aqui estava uma boa oportunidade para atrair novos espectadores. Se inicialmente pensávamos que estávamos a ver uma série sobre uma mulher a ser traída pelo marido, haverá melhor twist que essa mulher ser uma vítima de uma agência secreta?

Esperava que eles trabalhassem mais o conflito interior de Echo tal como fizeram com Saunders. Optaram por adiar mais uma vez. No final houve mais uma conversa com Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett) em como ambos querem derrubar a Dollhouse. Podiam ter aprofundado este assunto muito mais. Apesar disso, nem tudo foi mau. Eliza fez um óptimo trabalho e o caso da semana até nem foi mau. Teve bastante ritmo e manteve-me interessado até ao fim.

Os outros enredos foram um pouco desinteressantes. Embora eu goste do Senator Daniel Perrin (participação de Alexis Denisof) e espere que a investigação dele vá para a frente, achei que podia ter sido feito melhor. Afinal, ele passa o episódio a falar com a mulher, recebe documentos de alguém anónimo e fala mais um bocado com a mulher. Não podiam dar nada melhor ao Alexis Denisof?

A November (participação de Miracle Laurie) voltou à Dollhouse. Gostei da conversa dela com DeWitt (Olivia Williams), nem que seja para ver estas óptimas actrizes em acção. Foi bom vê-la outra vez, mas este enredo não trouxe nada de novo ou de relevante à história. Espero desenvolvimentos.

Para concluir, Instinct é um bom episódio, mas está um bocado aquém daquilo que se pedia da série seria neste momento. Manteve-me interessado e gostei, mas quero desenvolvimentos e que esta temporada se comece a mexer. O argumento foi sólido e foi bem realizado, principalmente, na última parte, a conversa com o pai do bebé e Echo. Para além disso, os casos da semana começam a ser cansativos se usados em demasia. Aguardo inovações.

Episódio 1 - “Vows”

A recepção ao episódio que marca o regresso de Dollhouse, Vows, foi mista. Quando fui ver o episódio tentei baixar as expectativas tendo em conta que a série tem consideráveis problemas, mas é muito difícil depois de Epitah One e de uma promessa que a série irá finalmente entrar na linha.

Vows é um episódio muito bom. Alguns dos problemas que Dollhouse tinha na primeira temporada ainda estão lá, mas outros estão a ser resolvidos e a série parece muito mais coesa do que na primeira temporada. Sim, ainda falta aquela inexplicável emoção que Buffy, Angel e Firefly tão facilmente atingiram. No entanto, estamos a ir pelo bom caminho.

O episódio é dividido em dois enredos: a forma como a Claire (participação de Amy Acker) está a lidar com a sua sua recente descoberta de que é uma Doll e a missão da semana. Os enredos estão bem interligados e o enredo secundário é um luxo. Com Paul (Tahmoh Penikett) na Dollhouse já não há aquela divisão no espaço que nos dava a sensação de estarmos a ver dois acontecimentos em separado ao mesmo tempo. Para além disso, o episódio faz um bom trabalho em planear os enredos para o futuro. Esta temporada tem tudo para ser mais equilibrada e coesa que a primeira.

O enredo de Whiskey é claramente o ponto alto do episódio. Amy Acker é uma actriz de uma categoria incrível e o material que Joss lhe deu neste episódio é ouro. As cenas em que ela contracenou com Topher (Fran Kranz) e Boyd (Harry Lennix) foram das melhores que esta série já mostrou. Topher é uma personagem complicada e muito difícil de simpatizar. Detestava-o na primeira tempora e quem leu estas reviews sabe muito bem que não tinha problemas em dizê-lo. No entanto, vimos-lhe uma faceta diferente em Epitah One e, em Vows, confirma-se que se tornou num dos trunfos da série.

O casamento de Echo (Eliza Dushku). Há quem diga que esta foi a parte pior do episódio e que Dollhouse está a voltar à fórmula da missão da semana. Tenho que discordar. Pode ter sido a parte menos boa do episódio, mas isso é por mérito do outro enredo e não desmérito deste. Gostei muito da missão. Jamie Bamber é um noivo à maneira. Os twists foram demais. Para além disso, acho que quem achou que isto foi apenas mais uma missão da semana, não prestou bem atenção à evolução da relação entre Paul e Echo.

Paul e Echo são claramente o foco da série e estou muito interessado em saber onde é que esta relação vai parar, mas, sobretudo, como vai lá parar. Paul parece ter esquecido os seus princípios e cedido aos seus desejos levando-nos à eterna questão: será que os fins justificam os meios? A montagem musical da noite de núpcias foi excelente e a cena em que Paul tenta fazer com que Echo se lembre do seu encontro em Man On The Street também. Encheram-me as medidas. Fizeram-me perceber que cada vez gosto mais da série e compreendo melhor os personagens.

Eliza Dushku foi um dos problemas da primeira temporada. Ela simplesmente não tinha a capacidade de interpretar um personagem como Echo e, embora tenham havido melhorias no decorrer da temporada, o problema persistiu. No entanto, com Amy Acker em cena, Dushku perde protagonismo e a sua representação parece superficial e nada credível. Eliza deve ter-se apercebido disso mesmo e esforça-se para nos dar a sua melhor interpretação até à data. Mesmo na cena em que teve que usar várias personalidades (perto do avião), esteve cinco estrelas. E, vamos ser sinceros, em termos de estrelas de acção na caixinha mágica, não econtram melhor que Eliza Dushku. Ela brilhou nas cenas de luta. Gosto muito de ver este lado de acção de Dollhouse.

O final do episódio deixa-nos ansiosos para o futuro. Mais uma vez, a montagem musical foi demais: Whiskey enfrenta os seus medos, Topher mostra os seus conflitos interiores que pareciam inexistentes no passado, Victor (Enver Gjokaj) e Sierra (Dichen Lachman) de mãos dadas e uma aliança entre Paul e Echo que está cada vez mais consciente do que lhe está a acontecer. Se juntarmos a tudo isso o enredo do Senador Daniel Perrin (participação de Alexis Denisof) vemos que a série está finalmente a ganhar consitência prometendo uma boa temporada.

Uma coisa que adorei no episódio foi a forma como os personagens falam abertamente das coisas que o espectador está a pensar. Se nós nos questionamos sobre as acções dos personagens, tem toda a lógica que eles também façam isso uns aos outros. Por exemplo: porque é que Paul decidiu cooperar com a Dollhouse; se Boyd se sente tão mal com a moral da Dollhouse, porque está lá?; as cicatrizes de Victor serem tratadas e não as de Whiskey; o facto de Echo ser um Active especial. É apenas mais uma das coisas que tornam o diálogo do episódio genial.

Resumindo, Dollhouse não é uma série perfeita, mas é sólida. Vows foi um episódio muito bom que plantou as sementes para o futuro. Aguardo com impaciência o seu desenvolvimento. Joss Whedon fez um óptimo trabalho na realização, mas, principalmente, no diálogo. No entanto, a série já nos mostrou que faz melhor, portanto é isso que queremos.

Autch. Esta doeu. Dollhouse arranca a sua pior audiência até à data e não parece que vá levantar. Assim, é extremamente provável que não sejam encomendados os restantes 9 episódios para completar a temporada. Se isso realmente acontecer, e as probabilidades dizem que sim, existem várias hipóteses:

• Vão ser emitidos os 13 episódios, como planeado;
• Será cancelada e os restantes episódios serão usados de outra foram, por exemplo, emitidos ao Sábado;
• Os últimos episódios sejam guardados para o DVD.

How do you approach the potential for new viewers to watch the show?

The first episode this season attempts to make it easier for new viewers to understand the premise, but at some point you need to connect to the characters or not.

Episode 6. He will play the head of another dollhouse.

How “arc’y” is the show going to be this season?

It’s going to be pretty “arc’y”. People reacted very well to the arcs of the characters lives in season 1.

What convinced Fox to renew the show?

Nature of the business, nature of the fanbase. The fanbase is in it for the long haul, they will see it through even after it is cancelled and Fox realizes that. “I don’t make hit shows, I make shows that stick around.”

What is it going to be like for the characters this season?

Victor and Sierra can’t keep their hands off each other. Echo is building herself and she wants allies and wants to put together a team to help her. She is looking for a sense of family.

Are there plans to get the rest of Firefly cast on this season?

There’s a “death match” between Firefly and Battlestar actors to get themselves on the show . He has no fear of adding any past actors he knows to the show.

Does Summer Glau’s character work at Ray Wise’s dollhouse?

Q: How does it feel to be back for a Season 2?

Joss: This process has been like skiing in a cartoon, where you go up the mountain and down the mountain, and up and down. Right now, we are pretty high up on it because we realized that we were actually going to have to work for a living, this summer. The first thing I did was get together with my writers and start talking about what possibilities there were, particularly after we had made an incredibly strange book-end to the show, with “Epitaph One.” And, what we discovered was that the possibilities were entirely limitless, and that we had more excitement and enthusiasm about the show than we did by a country mile, last year. We are in it now.

Q: Are you more confident in what the show is now?

Joss: Before, it was an idea that we had a lot of trouble defining, and America got to watch that. Now, we feel like it is defined. The network understands what it is, and we understand what it is. We know what our cast is capable of, which is wonders. We came in with the most excitement, and have been having a great deal of fun, ever since. The mandate has been, “How far can we take this? How much can we twist the knife? Where can we find alliances that we did not have? Where can we pull people apart, who seem to be together? And, most importantly, how can we build Echo up from nothing?”

That’s basically where she started last year, and we want to really give her a sense of momentum and purpose that will ground the show, in a way that it couldn’t be last year. It has been our mission statement to make things harder for everybody, find ways to bring back all the extraordinary re-occurring actors we had and, most importantly, let things begin to cohere. And, the good news about that is, once Echo starts really realizing that, as a person, she not only exists, but she has a mission and something she wants.

Q: Will what happened to Echo in the Season 1 finale affect her in Season 2?

Joss: This year, we are going to see the results of everything she went through last year, particularly the event with Alpha, where Echo was downloaded with all of her personalities. We are going to see what affect that’s had on her, and we are going to find her to be a great deal less passive and a great deal more directed in what she wants. That is, of course, going to make her life a lot harder. The more she finds out about what is going on around her, and the more we find out, the creepier it is going to get because creepy is what it makes it fun.

Q: How will “Epitaph One” change things within the series itself?

Joss: “Epitaph One” did present the particular problem of serving two masters — people who had seen it and people who hadn’t. I am used to that. I made an entire movie (Serenity) that had that problem, and only that problem. So, we talked about, “Do we want to just forget about it?” And, the answer was that we were fascinated by that world, in its connection to this world. We will see the future again. In fact, we will see it, first thing. We will go back in time, as a book-end structure for this first episode. So, if you haven’t seen that, it will explain itself. It will say what that episode said, which is that all of this will result in disaster.

The actual bulk of the show takes place three months after the events of “Omega,” but we will be visiting that future, every now and then. It will not be something where we can change it, or where we send people back in time, or that anybody has metal under their flesh. I love that stuff, but apparently that gets you canceled.

Q: What did you think when they told you that “Epitaph One” wouldn’t air on television? Were you disappointed?

Joss: When they told me it wasn’t going to air, I thought, “Oh, well, we’ve been canceled.” I was disappointed because I thought, “What a great way to go out.” And, I was so proud of what we had accomplished. I loved that episode and the performances in it, from the people we had in the future and from our regular cast, in the bits they did where they all got to play a little something that they hadn’t played before. I really, really wanted it to be on, so when all of that didn’t happen, after a lot of begging and whining on my part, I figured, “Well, okay, that is the death nail. It is just not worth it to them.” So, there was a little bit of re-calibration.

It wasn’t a question of panic, so much as, “Okay, well, it is going to be on the DVD. It will exist, and the true fans will go to it.” Now, it does create the problem of the new viewers versus the old, but any season does. We have so many regulars and relationships, and so much mythology already, around the central premise that this woman can be anyone, that this first episode has a lot of catching up for any viewer, whether or not “Epitaph One” was a part of it.

Q: You’ve said that viewers shouldn’t necessarily rely on what we saw in those memories in “Epitaph One.” Will there be a way that we can trust you, as storytellers, or will you be a wiggling out of some of the things that you showed us in the future?

Joss: Yes, I did say that the flash forwards of our own characters, and what they’re going through, was based on an imprint memory that could be somewhat faulty. And, I said that for the exact reason that we may want to fudge that. There is no way you can map out a television show completely, in the first year, because in the fourth year, you find out that, “My God, that works so much better,” and to be wed to the other thing would be a disservice, so we did allow ourselves some wiggle room. I also do not think of it as cheating because they are my rules. It is my show and, if you do not like my show, I’m going home.

But, no, it isn’t because this whole thing is about perceived reality. It is about the difference in how I think of you, and how you think of you, and the events. So, to me, it made sense to have that in our pocket. What we are doing is basically moving towards those memories, but we are also being very cagey about the context. The great thing about all of those scenes is that they asked as many questions as they provided answers for, and some of the answers to some of those questions will not be what people expect.

Q: In regard to the character of Echo, one of the common criticisms among viewers was that it was hard to connect to her, as a character, because she was wiped clean, at the end of every episode. Going forward, how do you envision people being able to connect to Echo if, in the end, she is just going to be blank again? Or, is she going to be that well impacted by all of those downloads in the Season 1 finale?

Joss: She has gone to a new level this season, and we will see that she has a cohesiveness and a mission that makes every engagement mean a great deal more to her. And, Echo has her own agenda, which is something she didn’t quite have before. We built to that in “Omega,” when she had been dumped with all the personalities and we heard her say her name. At the end of the first episode back, we are going to see how far she’s come, and it’s a little further than the people around her know. So, we are addressing that exact thing.

Q: So, even after her wipes, she is going to have a personality that viewers will see?

Joss: We are going to see her as we know her, and then we are going to see something very different. That is pretty much all I can say.

Q: Whether it’s really true or not, how does it feel to know that Kevin Reilly says he is motivated by fear from your fans?

Joss: He should fear them. God knows, we do. I think he was probably motivated by what we are all motivated by. It is definitely true that the fans made themselves heard, but that was by loving the thing and DVR-ing it.

There was no angry campaign. There was no bottles of anything being sent. There wasn’t any of that. It was just the studio’s understanding that the math of television is different than in used to be. We may not go out as broad as something like Lost, but the fans will come, forever. That revenue stream does not dry up. That is the thing that ultimately motivated them.

Q: You’ve talked about having trouble defining the show, in the first season, which seemed to have a lot to do with having very attractive people doing shower scenes. Can you talk more about the pressures that you had from the network, and what you are doing to deal with that?

Joss: The network did not pressure us to have shower scenes, in every episode. That just happened, naturally. But, we actually haven’t broken a story with a shower scene yet, in Season 2. We are a little disappointed in ourselves, and we know that we have let America down, too.

They were not pressuring us to make the show sexier or edgier. They were basically pressuring us to make the show safer and easier to take, which is completely understandable, on a perfectly reasonable agenda. I’m just not very good at that. So, if there is something in the show that seems a little bit off, or maybe a little bit racy, know that that was totally me and Andrew Chambliss. The other writers are all Mormons.

Q: What was important to you, in defining the show for Season 2?

Joss: Defining the show meant getting out of the idea that it was only an engagement-of-the-week adventure show. Ultimately, the reason that people were coming back to the show, and the reason the show became fascinating, was the cast. That’s what people tuned in to see. It wasn’t necessarily the engagement-of-the-week, though we work very hard to make those as interesting and as useful as possible, to reflect back on everybody.

But, ultimately, it was the ensemble. It was the people and the characters that we wanted to talk about. As soon as we had license to do that, and as soon as the inner workings of the Dollhouse became as important as the engagements, then we felt that the show started to work, and the network felt the same thing.

Q: You said that last season, you didn’t necessarily have the show defined. In retrospect, do you think you might have just been a little too candid about the difficulties you were having, finding the show?

Joss: The thing is, I can’t help it. The struggle we were going through was monumental. The struggle the cast was going through was reflective of the fact that we never shot one single episode in order. We literally had to give them memos about what they knew or didn’t know yet, for every show, because we were scrambling so much.

I may, in fact, be too candid, but we were under a microscope. Every time we got shut down, people wanted answers and some explanation. And, if an episode was nothing more than diverting, and we hadn’t quite gotten in the experience as much, I wanted people to know that I knew that, and that we were trying to get something out. The struggle we had was causing it to stumble a little bit. I can’t put something out there that is less than what it could be, without some sort of explanation. If I didn’t say anything, the fans tended to panic. But, I also can’t help myself. I wanted people to know the truth.

Q: Can the post-apocalyptic stuff in “Epitaph One” be avoided?

Joss: I tend to think not. “Epitaph One” makes our job more interesting. It basically did give us a sense of direction, and a sense of exactly where we wanted to go with the season. The stuff that happens in “Epitaph One” is 10 years down the road. The show could run for a long time, before any of that stuff starts to manifest. But, it did give us a sense of what we wanted to talk about, in terms of the external world, the abuse of power, the internal workings of the Dollhouse, the alliances that are going to form and the feuds that are going to happen.

Q: Can you still make a show for however many million per episode, if you are only on TV for a few million people, but you are number one with these other new measures? Does the business model change, depending on where and how the show is watched?

Joss: The business model does change. It breaks down, between the studio and the network. The network has the revenue of airing it. The studio has the revenue of owning it. And, ownership is now part of television. DVD is really the market, although that market will, of course, be sucked up by the Internet, once that technology progresses, in a few years. It’s not so much about being streamed for huge amounts of money, but all of those revenue streams are taken into account.

It used to be who was tuned in that night, but our DVR numbers were about the highest, while our Friday night numbers were hilarious. So, they are taking all of that into account. Also, DVDs and feeds are being bought now, 10 years after the fact, so they are thinking long-term, which is not something you expect from these people, so we are really grateful for that.

Q: If you got the same exact numbers, at the end of Season 2, given your experience this past year, would you still be worried or would you be more confident?

Joss: I do not think I have a worry left in me. I think I have reached a zen place. And, the fact is that I got to tell stories with this cast. Had they taken all of that away from me, I felt like “Epitaph One” was a hell of a way to go out, even though it was made for very strange reasons. But, I am so grateful to be back here now, taking it one day at a time.

I’m always preparing for the storm. That is how I used to live with Buffy. We ended every season knowing that, if that was the last episode, we’d feel some sense of closure. We are trying to do that same thing, without ever closing the door. So, as long as I am getting to play with these people, I’m happy. The numbers have never been my concern. I have never done huge numbers. I am not a big hit guy. What I do is find the best ensembles on television, and then I make them work their asses off. And, as long as I get to do that, I am happy.

Q: How much can you use Amy Acker this season, given her new series?

Joss: Not nearly as much as we would like, but we are going to make the most of her in those few episodes.
